The Voyagers helped to welcome in the Asian New Year with an action-packed Team Celebration.  Chalk Hill’s black belt, Melissa Carter, of Carter’s Cardio Fitness & Self Defense, coordinated an exciting Taekwon-Do demonstration for us.  This was followed by small group instruction and practice of self-defense techniques.  We all had a wonderful time!!

Several of our students of Asian descent or interest, volunteered to share information about their cultures.  They shared magnificent articles of clothing, a fan, maps, and other artifacts.  Each child put a great deal of effort into preparing his/her presentation and we all learned so much!

Thank you to Voyagers:

Ellie Gilchrist, Japan

Lianna Regina, Korea

Rita Thomas, India

Anand  Veeraraghav, India

Avi  Veeraraghav, India

In addition, we learned and/or practiced eating rice with chop sticks, made lucky bracelets, and learned about some of the preparations and traditions that help to bring in the New Year.

We are proud to announce our second marking period’s Team Boy and Team Girl!

Congratulations to
Team Girl:  Lauren Simon and
Team Boy:  Austin Barrett

Both children consistently demonstrate excellent citizenship.  They are very kind and helpful to others, and both give their personal best in everything that is asked of them.

We have noticed that many of your children are beginning to run low on school supplies.  We’d appreciate your asking your child about the state of his/her supplies.

Gung Hay Fat Choy (Happy New Year!) and thanks for your continued support!

Our Team Celebration on November 21, had a Heroes theme. We were very fortunate to have a local hero, John Tartaglio, as a guest speaker.  (He’s Sarah Capodagli’s cousin).  This amazing, young man told the story of his devastating illness, and his refusal to allow a physical disability to place limitations on his life.  He wowed the Team with his determination to lead a physically active life that includes marathons and much more!.   John is an inspiration to all of us!

Thanks to our Team Parents, Mrs. Ochsendorf and Mrs. Guinta who organized the luncheon portion of the celebration.  And we are especially appreciative of Mrs. Guinta’s sister, owner of M & M Farms, in Milford.  She graciously donated delicious Clementines and cider.  Thanks also to parents who photographed this special event:  Mrs. Lily, Mrs. Capodagli, Mrs. Barrett, and Mrs. Guinta.

We are proud to announce the winners of the coveted Voyager Team Girls and Boy awards.  Congratulations to Lindsey Fontneau, Dana Parmalee, and Zack Guinta.  Each of these children demonstrates excellent effort in his/her studies and terrific behavior.  They also have shown themselves to be outstanding citizens of our Chalk Hill School community.  We are honored to have these great kids on our Team!

Two of our dads volunteered their time as guest speakers.  Mr. Williams, Max’s dad, spoke about his experiences as a pilot.  We were all impressed by the many challenges of flying, as well as the huge number of training hours that it takes to become a pilot.   Mr. Williams’s timing was terrific, as the children were piloting their own popsicles stick planes, in their science classes.

Captain Fontneau, Lindsey’s dad is a professional fire fighter in Stamford.  He spoke to the children about his career.   Many of the children didn’t realize that school subjects, like chemistry, come in very handy to firefighters.  We also saw some very scary video clips that showed house fires and how quickly they can spread.  We definitely learned the importance of keeping Christmas trees well watered.  We thank both of these dads for taking time from their busy schedules, to share their expertise with us!

Craft Day is on Friday, December 21.  It is a day where children make gifts for their families.  We have many wonderful parents, who have spent a great deal of time planning, preparing, and shopping for this exciting Team event.  The Voyagers owe a debt of gratitude to Mrs. Regina, Mrs. Guinta, Mrs. Ochsendorf,  Mrs. Sylvester, Mrs.Cobuzzi, Mrs. Kuchenbecker, Mr. Esposito, and Mrs. Longo.  We need many adult helpers on Craft Day to ensure that everything goes well.  If you are available, we would greatly appreciate your help!  (We also invite grandparents and college-aged siblings.)

Thank you to all of the parents who took time from their busy schedules to chaperone our field trip, to the Hartford Stage. We would also like to thank the many parents who volunteered but were not randomly chosen to attend the trip.  Your support is greatly appreciated!  The “Christmas Carol” was a terrific performance with flying ghosts, snow, and amazing costumes.  We were mesmerized for two solid hours.  What a great way to kick off the holiday season and to connect to our literature program.

A special Voyager thanks to:

· •Mrs. O’Shaughnessy who tallied all of our t-shirt orders!!

· •The Silberman and Buck families for their generous donations, for the soldiers in Iraq.

· •Mrs. O’Shaughnessy who helped out tremendously, in LA classes.

•Mrs. Guinta and Mrs. Ochsendorf, our Team Moms, for all of their efforts on behalf of our Team!

•Our wonderful copy moms, Mrs. Charity, Mrs. Cumberbatch, and Mrs. Guinta.  We greatly appreciate your help!!

We hope that all of the Voyager students and their families have a wonderful holiday and a happy, healthy New Year!!

The competition for this year’s logo, motto, and cheer contest was fierce. There were many truly excellent submissions, and we are very proud of all of the contestants! Congratulations to the three winners: Eva Kocab, logo designer; Kelly Murtha, motto contributor; and Lianna Regina, cheer creator. Tee shirt order forms will be coming home soon.

The first week of school ended with an ice cream social and ‘Getting to Know You’ Bingo. This event was coordinated by Mrs. Ochsendorf and her team of helpers: Mrs. McCarter, Mrs. O’Shaughnessy, and Mrs. Wikman. We thank them all for putting together this wonderful treat with very little notice!

Thank you to all of the parents who completed and returned the Voyager Volunteer Forms. We are thrilled that so many of you want to help out this year! Our Team Parents, Mrs. Ochsendorf (Beki’s mom) and Mrs. Guinta (Zack’s mom), have been busily coordinating our many volunteers. We greatly appreciate their efforts and all of yours! If you would like to help, but haven’t signed up, it’s never too late…

Math - Our first unit in Math is Prime Time. The focus is on whole numbers and teaches the students about factors, multiples, divisors, products, prime numbers, composite numbers, and so much more. Students have opportunities to work alone, with a partner, in a group, or with the entire class to discover how math is applied to real-life situations. They have enjoyed playing games likes the Factor Game where they notice patterns and strategies that help them to better understand key concepts.

Language Arts - Our program this year consists primarily of Reading and Writing Workshops. The premise of these terrific programs is that to learn to read or write well, a child needs to spend a great deal of time practicing. At this point in time, all students should be reading for a minimum of 30 minutes per night, five times per week.

A factor that contributes greatly to the success of the Reading Workshop is the availability of a wide selection of books. The Voyager LA teacher’s would greatly appreciate donations/loans of used children’s books. Also, if anyone has extra bookcases, we would love to have more book storage.

Social Studies classes have culture - The Voyager students and teachers are definitely looking a little plumper these days. The weight gains are due to the delectable goodies shared by the students during Culture Days. We enjoyed sampling foods from all over the World and thank all of the wonderful chefs at home!

Science - Having completed the Safety Rules Unit, Voyager science students are now working in the lab. They are using the Scientific Method of Inquiry to solve hands-on problems in science. Students are currently investigating how different variables affect the pendulum’s swing.
