School Counselors are available at all Elementary Schools. This is a vital addition to our school community. School Counseling has changed greatly over the years and the focus is on working with all students, not just those who are at risk. School Counseling today takes a very pro-active approach rather than reactive.
Counseling services follow a developmental guidance model with the goal of providing a safe learning environment for all students. Developmental counseling seeks to teach children the specific skills they can benefit from at each developmental stage in their life. Hence, lessons are designed to meet the individual needs of children, our community, and our schools and classrooms at each grade level. Studies have shown that when student’s emotional and social needs are met, they will have an increased ability to focus on academics.
School Counselor’s seek to foster a sense of belonging for all students by implementing large group guidance activities. This program is delivered in the classroom setting. Topics include: self esteem, feelings, anger management, decision making, friendship, bullying, stress reduction, problem solving, conflict resolution, stranger awareness, and study skills.
Counselors are also available for individual and small group counseling as well. Administrators, teachers, and parents may consult with Counselors regarding any students who may be having difficulty with social, behavioral or learning issues. Parents are encouraged to contact the Counselors if they have any concerns regarding their child. Remember, Counselors are here to help in any way they can.
