Please contact me with any concerns regarding your child's health. If your child needs to receive any medication, including over-the-counter drugs such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc. or prescription drugs, Connecticut State Regulations state that a Physician/Parent/Guardian must sign a Medication Administration Form. An adult must delivery any and all medication to the Nurse's Office including over-the-counter medicines of every kind and must sign the medication over to the nurse. Prescription medicines must be in a pharmacy-labeled container stating name of student, name of drug, strength, dose, frequency, prescriber's name and date of the original prescription. Over-the-counter medicines must be in a sealed container. Only students with a signed pre-authorization of physician/school nurse/parent on the Medication Administration Form will be allowed to carry inhalers and/or epipens.
Other than the above, no student is to bring in or carry medicine. This includes over-the-counter medicines of any kind. Parents are welcome to come to the Nurse's Office to give his/her child medication without a signed Medicine Administration Form.
A HEALTHY MESSAGE… Fighting off the flu.....
As we all know, the flu season is upon us. With the shortage of the flu vaccine this year, fighting off the flu may be more difficult than usual, but certainly we can do our share to keep ourselves healthier during this season of viruses, stomach bugs and colds.
Symptoms of Cold vs. Flu
Cold Symptoms…..
• Fever is rare in adults & older kids, can be high in young children • Headache is rare • Muscle aches - mild • Tiredness/weakness - mild • Extreme exhaustion - never • Runny nose - often • Sneezing - often • Sore throat - often • Cough - mild hacking cough
Flu Symptoms…..
• Headache - sudden onset - can be severe • Muscle aches are usual and often severe • Tiredness & weakness often extreme lasting two or more weeks • Extreme exhaustion is sudden and often severe • Runny nose - sometimes • Sneezing - sometimes • Sore throat - sometimes • Cough - usual and can be severe
Both are upper respiratory illnesses caused by viruses.
Ways to cope with the flu and viruses.....
- Keep tissues with you everywhere you go and throw them away after use
Sneeze and cough into the crook of your arm - not into your hands Keep your hands to yourself - don't shake hands - share pencils or objects with each other Stay at least three feet away from others who might be sick
- WASH YOUR HANDS - FREQUENTLY!
- Use warm soap and water and SCRUB long enough to sing Happy Birthday twice - use paper towel to shut off water faucets and opening door knobs.
- Remember - if you or your child is sick - STAY HOME. Your child needs to be fever free, without medication, for 24 hours before returning to school. The same applies for vomiting/diarrhea and strep throat.
