JUNIOR
Developmental School Counseling Program
The purpose of the developmental school
counseling program for Juniors is to facilitate their academic,
personal/social and college/career plans. Students meet with
their counselors individually and in small groups. The junior
program consists of the following components:
- Exploration of colleges and careers
through the College
and Career Center
- Junior College Search Process Seminars
- Junior and Parent College Application
Process Program
- Academic Planning and 12th Grade Course
Selection
Throughout the year, counselors are available
for individual counseling concerning academic, social, personal
and crisis issues.
Looking Ahead to Your Future
The following guide was developed for each
grade level to assist students in preparing for each year
and planning for post high school.
If you have any questions, please feel
free to discuss them with your counselor.
JUNIOR YEAR
Things to think about:
- Am I taking courses that lead to my
goals and post high school plans?
- Am I giving my best to Junior course
work?
- With which teachers have I established
a strong rapport? (potential letters of recommendation)
- Which talents or strengths might I want
to further develop through post high school plans?
- Which activities will
I highlight on my college/job application?
Things to do:
- Update my personal file and resume
- Carry strong academic programs
- Register for PSAT/NMSQT test
in October (take it again this year). (Your score counts
for National Merit Scholarship consideration
- Continue extra-curricular
activities
- Maintain strong academic performance
and an excellent attendance record
- Check academic and performance graduation
requirements with your counselor
- Complete college search program
- Attend college fairs for information
on colleges you may be interested in
- Talk with parents, teachers and your
counselor about Senior
year course selection
- Talk with parents about college criteria,
interest, etc.
- Attend career
day held at Masuk in November
- Meet with college reps of interest
to you in the College and Career Center (see calendar)
- Register for SAT’s conducted
in the spring
- Meet with your counselor to discuss
college needs, interests, etc.
- List college choices
- Consult your counselor and academic
teachers about SAT
Subject tests
- If taking an AP
course, register for AP
Exams held in May
- Schedule interviews and college visits
for the Spring, Summer and Fall
- Send SAT
scores during the summer (especially if your are
applying early).
