The following are the goals of the World Language program:
1. To develop the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading
and writing in a modern world language for personal and career
applications by the students.
2. To enhance a student’s knowledge and appreciation of diverse
cultures.
3. To require a continuous high level of student participation
in the learning process.
4. To demonstrate capability for using technology within the curriculum.
Students receiving honors credit in a modern world language must
demonstrate:
1. greater frequency and accuracy in verbal participation
2. greater accuracy in written expression
3. the ability to comprehend independent reading assignments
4. the ability to complete independent projects

This course is designed to acquaint students with the basics of
the French language. Emphasis is placed on the use of cognates.
The level of instruction and the methods used are modified to accommodate
those students who need more reinforcement and practice. Some time
will also be devoted to the culture of the people of the world
whose native language in French.

FRENCH/UCONN CO-OP/HONORS

Students continue their study of the language at the Intermediate/Advanced
Level. Course content is aligned with the University of Connecticut's
courses French 267 (French Language and Culture, 3 credits) and
French 268 (Writing in French, 3 credits). Students must submit
a five-page paper to UCONN to earn college credit. Emphasis is
on improving both oral and written expression through discussion,
presentations and compositions on assigned topics. Extensive study
of grammar is included. In the spring, French 268 focuses on the
study of French texts and requires extensive written work. A five
page paper is required in the spring semester.
NOTE: for UCONN credit it is necessary to fulfill UCONN requirements.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT FRENCH LANGUAGE (R3, W3, N1, PS3, T1, R1, H4)

Students who enroll in AP French Language must already have a good
command of French grammar and vocabulary and have competence
in listening, reading, speaking and writing. This course covers
the equivalent of a third-year college course in advanced French
writing and conversation, and emphasizes the use of the French
language for active communication in various activities and disciplines.
Extensive written work will also be an integral part of this
course. To receive college credit, the AP French Language Examination
(given in May) must be taken and the score received must meet
the criteria set by individual universities/colleges.

LATIN I HONORS (R2, W2, N1, PS3, T1, RE1, H3)

Students learn the basics of Latin grammar and vocabulary through
fast-paced graded readings. The course, which begins the sequence
that leads to reading Roman authors in the third and fourth years,
may also be taken by college-bound students who wish to strengthen
their English grammar and vocabulary skills. Through readings which
incorporate grammar into the story of a typical Roman family of
the first century AD, students learn the basics of Latin and some
of the history and culture of a great empire from which many aspects
of today’s global culture take their cue. Incoming freshmen
must be placed in Honors Language Arts or Honors Math or have the
recommendation of their eighth-grade language arts teacher and
the approval of the World Language department chair.
LATIN II – HONORS (R3, W2, N1, PS3, T1, RE1, H3)
3420 Grades 10, 11, 12 C/W 1 Credit 1.00
This course reviews the elements of grammar before introducing
more advanced grammar. Students continue the narrative sequence
from Latin I-Honors, with an historical emphasis on Roman education
and the Roman colonial experience. Outside projects concentrate
the effort of students on single aspects of Roman life in depth.
LATIN III – HONORS (R3, W2, N1, PS3, T1, RE1, H3)
3430 Grades 11, 12 C/W 1 Credit 1.00
This course incorporates a comprehensive review of all Latin grammar
leading to reading Roman authors, including Catullus, Caesar, Ovid,
and Pliny. Students entering from Latin II-Honors will benefit
from the grammatical overview, and higher-achieving students from
first-year Latin who prefer a faster pace and the chance to read
Latin authors may be placed here. The course moves progressively
through the grammar, using example sentences and short readings
drawn from ancient authors rather than made-up didactic Latin.
Etymologies and other word studies, along with a series of self-tutorial
exercises, provide opportunities to dine-tune language skills.
LATIN IV – HONORS (R3, W3, N1, PS3, T1, RE2, H4)

This course uses careful readings of the odes of Roman poets Catullus
and Horace to prepare students for the AP Latin Literature Exam.
Students translate and analyze the odes as literature and write
critical essays in the context of comparison with modern poetic
expression.

This course incorporates curriculum of Latin IV (3440). Students
who plan to take the AP Latin Exam should enroll in this course.

Students in UCONN Spanish continue their study of the language at the Intermediate/Advanced
Level. Course content is aligned with the University of Connecticut's courses
Spanish 278 (Spanish Composition, 3 credits) and Spanish 279 (Spanish Conversation:
Cultural Topics, 3 credits). Students will read, analyze and demonstrate comprehension
of various themes and their implications as viewed from a particular Hispanic
perspective. Contemporary issues relative to the Hispanic world will also be
investigated. Students will become increasingly aware of the inter-relationship
between language, culture and literature through the analysis of selected literary
works and cultural readings.
NOTE: For UCONN credit, it is necessary to fulfill UCONN requirements.
SPANISH V – HONORS (R3, W3, N1, PS3, T1, RE1, H4)

Students in Spanish V continue their study of the language at
the intermediate/advanced level. Students will review all major
grammar topics and will read, analyze and demonstrate comprehension
of various themes relating to Hispanic culture/history/literature.
Students will become increasingly aware of the interrelationship
between language, culture, and literature through their analysis
of this material.
