GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

All students are required to carry a minimum of five courses each semester. Drug awareness education is mandated by the State of Connecticut (minimum 15 hours) as part of the graduation requirements. Students are required to take drug education awareness every year.

Exit Criteria / Graduation Requirements
To graduate from the Monroe Public Schools, a student must:
1. Earn a minimum of twenty (20) credits and meet the credit distribution requirement. The college preparation certificate program requires a minimum of twenty-three (23) credits.
2. Achieve proficiency on the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) in the areas of :
• Reading Across the Curriculum
• Writing Across the Curriculum
• Mathematics
• Science (future implementation)

In the event that the student does not meet the minimum level in any or all of the three (3) areas on the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT), the student must satisfactorily complete district performance task in that area. These tasks will be administered within the student’s English, social studies, and mathematics classes. (See Graduation Requirement Handbook)

College Preparatory Certificate
A minimum of twenty-three (23) credits is required for the College Preparatory Certificate. Upon successful completion of this program, students will receive a special College Preparatory Certificate as well as their graduation diploma. Please note that most colleges seek these minimal requirements. It is possible to pursue a college education without this certificate.

Students enrolled in the College Preparatory Program of Study are encouraged to take a variety of elective courses, which meet their individual interests and/or goals. In such cases the grade received in these elective courses will be used in the computation of the Honor Roll and total credits earned, but will be omitted in the computation of rank in class. Grades varying from "A+" to "F" will be issued as a normal procedure. A final grade will be issued to the student, but will be exempt from class rank computations. Students should review course descriptions to determine course weight.
