Service Learning Information Sheet

Any student interested in performing community service can now do so and receive recognition for providing this valuable service to our community.  Beginning in the fall of 2006, if a student has accumulated the necessary hours of service learning hours, the student may qualify to receive a black cord at graduation to denote this accomplishment.

To qualify, members of the classes must have the following hours upon graduation:

  • Class of 2008.....50 hours
  • Class of 2009.....75 hours
  • Class of 2010….100 hours (and all other classes there after)

Definition of Service Learning:  Providing service to an individual or agency pro bono to improve the environment, the community and life in general.

Examples of Service Learning Projects that are acceptable:; providing assistance to the elderly; tutoring other students; being a buddy to a special needs student; GAMES presentation, etc. (These may also be provided during study halls and/or lunch while in school.)

Examples of Service Learning Projects that are not acceptable:  helping a elderly relative; helping a parent or any other relative; attending trainings; attending meetings; chores; getting paid for services; attending a school sponsored activity during school hours.

Procedure:  Obtain a Service Learning Form from our online website, the main office or the guidance office and fill it out completely with all the proper signatures.  You are responsible for keeping all the forms until you have met all the requirements.  Upon completing the service hours, the Service Learning Coordinator will verify the information and log the hours for your student folder.  Upon completion of all the hours during your senior year, you may request a Congratulatory Service Learning Letter if all the requirements of Service Learning have been met.
