Reach for the Stars and

Touch every heart

Welcome to Stepney Elementary School , the Home of Caring Kids! Our mission and motto is to Reach for the stars and Touch every heart. Every member of our learning community, students, teachers, parents, resource staff, and administration puts this into practice by doing their very best and demonstrating excellence while caring for one another.

Stepney School is one of three elementary schools in Monroe, CT, nestled between Bridgeport and Danbury. The school population for the 2007-2008 school year is 537 students in Kindergarten through grade four. Our school has an average of five classes per grade level with class sizes range from 18 to 25.

If you plan to visit Stepney Elementary School, call ahead and check into the main office when you arrive. You will be offered a guided tour from administration and our student tour guides. This is just one of the jobs our students have as part of the Young Leadership Program. Third and fourth graders are encouraged to participate in leadership and service activities such as bus patrols, dismissal team, book buddies, tutors, ushers, tour guides, classroom helpers, art club, newspaper club, poetry club, math club, computer club, chorus and caring kids club. All students are encouraged to be involved in our school and help serve one another and the larger community.  We believe in enriching all our student’s lives, using a school-wide enrichment model.  Our school mission is to have every member in our community Reach for the Stars and Touch Every Heart.

Stepney Elementary School Goals

“Students will use multiple intelligences as an exploration to acquire visual interpretation, practice movement and understand spatial awareness, and develop oral/aural expression through skill development in a variety of problem solving activities that relate to self learning and growth.”

1. Students will work to increase achievement as measured by the quality of work they produced and their performance on internal and external assessments in order to improve literacy and numeracy. Students will participate in a variety of educational activities designed to enhance the mastery of the Monroe Public Schools curriculum based on the NCTM and NCTE standards and the Connecticut Frameworks. The use of technology will support the design of instruction and enhance learning.

2. Students will explore and use a wide range of technology to conduct research, communicate information and ideas, create original works, organize data, and solve problems.

3. Students and staff will continue to embrace diversity and enable students to transcend their own cultural experiences in order to understand and respect differences of others and experiences common to all people. In an effort to reduce racial, ethnic and economic isolation, many opportunities to celebrate diversity will be made at the classroom level, grade level, and schoolwide.

4. As part of our ongoing character education, we establish a learning culture that will promote students’ ethical development. At Stepney School, we support students as they strive to be exemplars of good citizenship measured by their actions as members of their school and their community.
